The original mosque was built in 1824–1826 for Sultan Hussein Shah, but by the 1920s it had fallen into disrepair and was replaced with the present structure. Designed by Denis Santry of Swan & Maclaren, the mosque blends Islamic and Indian architectural elements, and its gold domes — ringed with glass bottle ends donated by community members — make it one of Singapore’s most beloved landmarks.
