In The Majestic Theatre 1927, Clarissa reimagines one of Chinatown’s most iconic landmarks through bold colour and rhythm. The painting’s vivid greens, reds, and golds echo the vibrancy of Cantonese opera and early cinema, while the geometric forms capture the Art Deco flair of its 1920s origins. This mixed-media piece pays tribute to a building that has mirrored Singapore’s cultural evolution — from opera house to movie hall — standing as a timeless emblem of performance, memory, and change.
Built by Eu Tong Sen for his wife after she was once denied entry to an opera performance, this building was originally a Cantonese opera house known as Tien Yien Moh Toi. It later evolved into a cinema and was renamed “Majestic Theatre.” Its exterior is adorned with tiles depicting opera scenes and flying dragons — a visual nod to its theatrical origins.
